KEY STAFF SHORTAGE LEADS TO CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

By Kevin Keane on November 21, 2021

If you have school-age children, you’re probably familiar with the phenomenon of the Pigeon who is not allowed to drive the bus from the book, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems. Kids love it because the pigeon asks, and pleads and begs and throws a tantrum and the kids get to tell the pigeon no. It’s a hit among the social set that employs those same tactics to get what they want.

This Fall, when many schools opened, they did so with a shortage of key staff – bus drivers, custodians, and substitute teachers – prompting people affected by the shortage to see if that pigeon was still anxious to give bus driving a try.

You likely know it’s not just schools that are affected by the labor shortage or Great Reassessment or a shortage not of labor but of good jobs. The change in our economy and workforce is related to more than just measures taken to mitigate the pandemic. Of course, women and people of color were impacted the most by these changes in the workforce.

A Pew Research Center survey this year found that 66 percent of the unemployed had “seriously considered” changing their field of work, a far greater percentage than during the Great Recession.

Across industries, hiring and retaining talent is a huge struggle. Even when COVID is in our rear view, we will be confronting the challenges that this time revealed to us.
By recognizing where you are succeeding, where the gaps are, and the trends to look out for, these challenges can become opportunities.

So how do you capitalize on those opportunities?

Finding and Hiring the Right Talent
How do you know if you’re asking the right questions to get the best candidate?
How does a new person or role fit into your current organization and culture?
You’ve found a great person, how do you make them say yes?

We work with you to understand your organization, culture and needs to develop a comprehensive Search Strategy. Working with our partners, we have a pulse on diverse talent, with a wide network and have the ability to present a diverse slate of qualified candidates for every search.
We facilitate Hogan Leadership Forecast Series Executive Assessments with finalized candidates to assist in understanding their potential Job Fit, Performance Risks and Cultural Fit with your organization. And finally, we can provide coaching from the interview to the offer letter so that your candidates come on board.

Managing Talent
Do you know your retention, employee satisfaction, and revenue per employee metrics?
Are you happy with the results?
Do you have conversations about corporate culture that don’t go anywhere?
If you asked your leadership team what your culture and values are – would they all have the same answers?

We facilitate discussions with key stakeholders and examine organizational processes and policies to assess the drivers and barriers to success in developing your leaders.

We diagnose the root cause of issues and challenges to effectively solve problems and move your management process forward.

We collaborate with you throughout the process to continuously adapt to business realities and provide support.

Optimizing Talent
Are you struggling to find full head count or need more people than you currently have?
Is your team experiencing quality and capacity issues? Are projects running behind?
Do you have a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) strategy that is propelling your company forward? (Link to DEI content)

It may be that you have the right team in place but the policies and processes you have in place are slowing them down. Working across all functions in an organization – Finance, IT, HR, Call Centers – we optimize your processes to provide maximum value at minimum cost without sacrificing customer satisfaction.

We do that by providing:
Process Improvement to eliminate redundancy, increase productivity and reduce wasted time and
Decrease costs in business critical activities while increasing effectiveness
